Senior journalist Syed Abdal Ahmed has been appointed as the Principal Information Officer (PIO) of the Press Information Department (PID) on a contractual basis in Grade-1 status (Secretary rank) for one year, according to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Sunday.
The notification stated that the appointment will take effect from the date of joining and is subject to the condition that he must sever all professional, business, and institutional affiliations with any government, semi-government, or private organisation. Other terms and conditions of the appointment will be determined through a formal contract.
Syed Abdal Ahmed, currently the executive editor of the Daily Amar Desh, is a prominent journalist leader and former general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club. He also served as deputy press secretary to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during 1992-1996, holding the rank of deputy secretary.
Over his long career in journalism, he has worked with several leading media outlets, including Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Daily Janakantha, Daily Dinkal, and Saptahik Bichitra. He served as the elected general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club for two consecutive terms from 2011 to 2015.
Ahmed has also contributed to media development and policy discussions as a member of the media reform commission formed under the interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He is a life member of Bangla Academy and has authored more than 20 books on journalism, history, culture, and social issues.
Born on November 28, 1962, in Nasirpur village of Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria, he completed his schooling in Habiganj and later graduated in Chemistry (BSc Honours and MSc) from Jahangirnagar University. He began his journalism career in 1982 with the Daily Bangla as a university reporter.
Ahmed has received several awards for investigative journalism, including the Philips Award and ESCAP-FEJ Award, and was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Dhaka Reporters Unity in 2025.
