Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have stressed the need to strengthen tourism and connectivity to unlock the untapped potential of their bilateral ties, during a high-level meeting in Dhaka.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dharmapala Weerakkody, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 28.

During the meeting, the two sides took stock of ongoing cooperation and explored ways to deepen engagement across a broad range of sectors. Particular emphasis was placed on boosting tourism exchanges and improving connectivity—seen as key levers to increase people-to-people contact and give trade and investment a timely lift, says a press release.

According to the foreign ministry release, they agreed that stronger air and maritime links, coupled with coordinated tourism initiatives, could significantly raise visitor numbers and promote richer cultural exchange between the two countries.

The State Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s growing export strengths in jute, pharmaceuticals, leather goods and information technology, noting that improved connectivity would help smooth the flow of trade and logistics between the two markets.

Both sides also underlined the importance of expanding cooperation in health, education, culture and sports, while reaffirming their commitment to regional collaboration. She reiterated Bangladesh’s strong support for revitalising the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to advance shared prosperity across the region.

The meeting ended on an upbeat note, with both sides expressing confidence that enhanced connectivity and tourism cooperation would act as catalysts for a more dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership.
