Dhaka airport launches free Wi-Fi service
Free high-speed internet now available across all terminals, with capacity to serve nearly 37,500 passengers simultaneously
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) has launched a large-scale free Wi-Fi service powered by a 40 Gbps network, marking a major step in Bangladesh’s efforts to modernise passenger services and transform the country’s busiest airport into a fully digital aviation hub.
The service was formally inaugurated on Sunday afternoon by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam at the airport premises.
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Rehan Asif Asad were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Afroza Khanam said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring “fast and reliable internet for all”, as pledged in its election manifesto.
She said the new service would significantly improve the digital travel experience for both domestic and international passengers using the airport.
The minister also expressed optimism about the early inauguration of the long-awaited third terminal at HSIA, describing it as a major milestone for Bangladesh’s aviation sector.
According to officials, the free Wi-Fi network now covers nearly 94,000 square metres of airport space, including Terminal 1, Terminal 2, the Domestic Terminal, VIP and VVIP terminals, as well as parking areas.
The infrastructure includes 250 high-capacity access points, 48 kilometres of optical fibre and ethernet cables, and 37 access switches designed to ensure fast and stable connectivity throughout the airport.
State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said more than 37,000 passengers would be able to use the service simultaneously.
Each access point can support up to 150 users at a time, allowing approximately 37,500 passengers to remain connected across the airport network.
Officials said the system is capable of delivering uninterrupted high-speed internet services even during peak passenger hours.
The trial operation of the service began on April 26, and since then around 20,000 passengers have already used the network, consuming nearly 2.3 terabytes of data.
Airport authorities believe the new digital infrastructure will improve passenger convenience by making communication, online services, travel updates and digital transactions faster and more accessible.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen the image of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport as a modern and technology-driven international gateway as Bangladesh moves forward with broader aviation expansion and smart airport development plans.
