Unauthorised drone seized at Shahjalal Airport VIP area
A preliminary investigation revealed that the drone was being operated without obtaining prior permission
Civil aviation authorities seized an unauthorised drone from the VIP area of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after detecting illegal operation on Saturday evening, reports UNB.
The drone was confiscated around 8:37 pm on April 4 while it was being used to film video footage in front of the VIP Pole Gate during the arrival of players participating in the SAFF Championship, according to a press release from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
A preliminary investigation revealed that the drone was being operated without obtaining prior permission from CAAB, violating existing aviation regulations.
Under the "Drone Registration and Operation Policy 2020," airport areas are classified as 'red zones', where flying drones are strictly restricted without special authorisation from the relevant authorities. The policy explicitly bans any drone operations in these sensitive zones unless explicit clearance has been granted.
Officials have confirmed that necessary legal action will be taken against those responsible for this unauthorised activity to ensure comprehensive security at the airport premises.
The Civil Aviation Authority has urged the public to strictly adhere to existing rules and regulations when operating drones, particularly in sensitive locations such as airports. Authorities emphasised that such violations pose serious security risks and will not be tolerated.
The incident highlights growing concerns over unauthorised drone operations near critical infrastructure. Aviation security officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have reminded drone operators that prior approval from CAAB is mandatory for any flight activities in restricted zones.
Legal proceedings against the violators are currently underway, authorities confirmed.
