Police have launched a full-blown investigation after recovering nearly 18 kilograms of gold from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arriving from Dubai, seeking detailed information on all individuals associated with the flight as well as surveillance footage.
According to sources at the airport police station, the incident took place on March 28, when flight BG-348 landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 9:08pm and was parked at boarding bridge C-02, reports Bangla Tribune. A search of the aircraft led to the recovery of approximately 18 kilograms of gold concealed inside a toilet panel.
Following the seizure, customs authorities filed a case with the airport police station, setting in motion a full-scale investigation into the smuggling attempt.
Investigating officer Inspector Abul Kaiyum said the matter is being treated with the highest priority.
“We are trying to determine how such a large quantity of gold made its way onto the aircraft and who was involved. A letter has been sent to the airline’s managing director seeking detailed information,” he said.
Police have requested comprehensive data on all personnel involved in the flight, including pilots, cabin crew, technical staff, mechanics, helpers and cleaning personnel. The information sought includes full names, permanent and present addresses, national identification numbers and professional details.
Authorities have also asked for a complete passenger list, along with passport numbers and travel-related information.
In addition, police have requested CCTV footage from inside the aircraft, as well as video recordings from the boarding bridge and runway areas.
Investigators have also sought permission to inspect the aircraft and the relevant locations as part of the probe.
Officials involved in the investigation believe the gold was concealed in a highly sophisticated manner inside the aircraft’s toilet panel, suggesting it was unlikely to have been the work of a lone individual. They suspect the involvement of an organised international smuggling network.
Determining whether the gold was loaded onto the aircraft before departure, during the flight or after landing remains the key challenge for investigators.
Police said that once all requested information and footage are obtained, it will be easier to identify those involved in the smuggling operation and take further legal action.
