Bhola, the largest island district of Bangladesh, is fast appearing as an alluring destination for travellers who seek tranquility, natural beauty and authentic experiences through rustic rural landscape and river view. Nestled in Barisal Division and encircled by the mighty Meghna, Tetulia and the Bay of Bengal, this enchanting region is called the "Pearl of the South".

Bhola's crown jewel is Char Kukri Mukri Wildlife Sanctuary under Char Fasson upazila. Spanning 40 hectares of dense mangrove forest, this sanctuary is home to 277 plant species and serves as a breeding ground for eight species of herons. Visitors can discover its winding canals by boat and spotted deer and watch diverse bird species in their natural habitats.
Travellers can join campfire and do the camping at Char Kukri Mukri Eco-forest. Its peaceful mangrove environment offers a unique overnight experience. As evening sets in, visitors gather around cracking fires under starlit skies while sharing stories. The distant calls of wildlife also echo through the forest. These camping adventures, often guided by local operators, provide an immersive way to connect with the sanctuary's pristine wilderness and create lasting memories.
Monpura Island, famous for its pristine beaches and lush greenery, gained nationwide recognition as the backdrop of the popular Bangladeshi film "Monpura". Surrounded by the Meghna on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on the south, this quiet island offers a breathtaking view of sunset and a peaceful retreat from urban life.
In Char Fasson lies town Jakob Tower, tallest tourist watchtower in Bangladesh as well as in the subcontinent. Natural beauty can be enjoyed from this tower up to an area of 100 kilometre.
The Meghna riverfront in Bhola Sadar provides a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and boat rides. Visitors can witness the stunning confluence of river and sea at Haringhata River Estuary, an ideal spot for birdwatching and photography. Unlike lively destinations like Cox's Bazar or Kuakata, Bhola offers a distinct charm. "The beauty of the flowing river here is no less captivating than the sea," remarked a visitor from Dhaka. The district's laid-back atmosphere, warm hospitality and fresh seafood, particularly the prized hilsa fish, make it an attractive getaway for nature lovers and food enthusiasts alike.

The ideal time to visit Bhola is between November and February, when the weather is cold and skies are clearer, making boat trips and outdoor activities more enjoyable. Travellers can reach Bhola from Dhaka by launch from Sadarghat (8-10 hours) or by road via the Barisal route.
Road connectivity to Bhola has improved significantly in recent years. A 150-kilometre regional highway now connects Bhola town to various upazilas, making road travel more convenient than ever before.
From Dhaka, travellers can take buses from Sayadabad Bus Terminal to Jhalakathi or Barisal, with journey times of approximately 5-7 hours. From Barisal, visitors can cross to Bhola by speedboat, launch or ferry. Alternatively, from Jhalakathi, local transport options can be arranged to reach Bhola.
